Journaling 101 for the Corporates

A common myth about journaling among folks is that it is only for the "creative" or the ones who can write and draw well. Luckily, The Lifestyle Initiative is here to bust that myth! The truth is that journaling in an inclusive practice and can benefit people from all walks of life, all ages and varying career paths.

On a personal level, I have been working for about 2 years in the corporate sector (ex-Ersnt & Young (EY)) and journaling has been my 'go-to' during all personal and professional challenges and achievements. It is from personal experience that I assert and insist that a good corporate professional must journal to build an excellent career in their field.

The way the benefits of journaling translate into the corporate world is nothing short of magic! Journaling ensures the sharpening of the skills required in a typical consulting, product management or managerial role. Here are 7 reasons why corporate professionals and business professionals must journal to become the best in their domain and their own best versions:

  • Stress Reduction: Stress is an old friend of those in the corporate sector. Writing in a journal leads to a therapeutic release of pent-up emotions. When you're feeling anxious, or upset, pouring your feelings into words can be incredibly helpful in relieving stress. It can help you process your emotions, gain clarity, and reduce stress in the fast-paced environment of the corporate sector.

  • Problem Solving: Corporate roles require robust and prompt problem-solving skills. In fact, a good consultant is synonymous with an effective problem-solver. Journaling about challenges or dilemmas you face professionally and personally can lead to innovative solutions. By detailing your problems, you get the opportunity to view them from different angles and find new approaches to address them. So, journaling enables you to be a more structured and innovate problem-solver, an absolute bonus of a skill to have in the corporate world.

  • Enhanced Emotional Intelligence: Cultivating emotional intelligence is an important aspect of succeeding in your corporate career. The process of writing about your feelings and experiences increase your emotional intelligence. It enables you to understand and manage your emotions more effectively, and improve your ability to empathize with others, overcome challenges and handle conflicts effectively.

  • Goal Setting: As a corporate professional, you will have to juggle among various projects and engagements, while trying to maintain a sane work-life balance. To do all this and more, journaling can be an effective tool for setting and tracking personal goals. When you write down your aspirations and break them into smaller, actionable steps, you're more likely to stay consistent and make progress. The act of journaling keeps your goals at the forefront of your mind and helps you track your progress in a quantifiable manner. Make to-do lists, use progress trackers & tick off those goals you've always wanted to achieve!

  • Self-Reflection: An exceptional professional is always self-aware and focused towards self-growth. However, none of this is possible for you if you don't self-reflect. Journaling provides a dedicated space for introspection and reflection. By writing down your thoughts and experiences, you can gain insights into your own mind, emotions, and behaviors. This process of self-examination allows you to identify patterns, both positive and negative, and helps you make more informed choices.

  • Documenting your Experiences: A corporate role leads you onto a steep learning curve and helps you achieve important milestones in your professional and peronal lives. Documenting the lessons you learn along the way and celebrating your achievements through journaling serves as a personal time capsule. It allows you to capture important moments and experiences, creating a lasting record of your professional journey that you can revisit in the future and utilise to help others or maybe, even write a management book!

  • Creative Expression: Journaling is not limited to words alone; it can also involve doodles, sketches, and other forms of creative expression. This allows you to tap into your creativity and explore new ways of expressing yourself- a necessary change and break from the daily intricacies of any job!
